Fossil graptolites are thin, often shiny, markings on rock surfaces that look like pencil marks, and their name comes from the Greek for ‘writing in the rocks’. Graptolites are the remains of intricate colonies, some of which accommodated up to 5000 individual animals; these individuals lived in a skeleton of collagen, similar to the material from which our finger nails are made.

They are exclusively found in marine sedimentary rocks of the upper Cambrian right through the Ordovician, Silurian and the Lower Carboniferous. They are commonly found in black, organic and iron sulphide rich mudstones and shales, the so called ‘graptolite facies’ (Jstor, 2014). Graptolites (The class) include the order Dendroidea, a multi-stiped ancestral version of the graptoloids. The fossils are most commonly found as two dimensional, flattened specimens. Rare three-dimensional fossils have allowed palaeontologists to reconstruct the skeleton, showing that it was a colonial organism.

The Graptoloidea were pelagic, drifting with the currents, and were the most important members of the plankton before dying out in the early Devonian. Graptolites are fossil colonial animals who lived from the Upper Cambrian through the Lower Carboniferous Period.
